My basil is starting to wind down now and it is time to start thinking about next year's harvest. Because I planted basil at different intervals I have some going to seed and a few plants left that are still producing leaves for me. Here you can see the flowers starting to form on the head of the basil, they are a pretty shade of lavender but I snapped this shot a bit too late as most of the flowers are already gone. With many plants that do not produce an actual vegetable they flower before going to seed, examples are cilantro, basil, and lettuce. Once the flowering is done the stalks dry out and are ready to be harvested for seed. ![]() I took these inside to finish drying them before harvesting my basil seeds for next year's garden. And all that work for little seeds the size of pin heads.
