Sassafrass Tea

I was at my mother's looking through some of her things and she showed me a small bag containing what looked like tree bark.  A somewhat nostalgic look passed over her face when I asked about the bark and she told me that my grandfather used to like Sassafrass tea.  Being ever curious I asked if I might try some...afterall I love tea and maybe this would be a new favorite!  Mom shared some root with me and I headed home to google what I needed to do for a cup of grandpa's tea.

oooh.  Google.

So, apparently Sassafrass was the main ingredient in root beer many years ago but was removed as it has toxins in it that are reportedly poisonous if consumed in large quantities.  I am not consuming large quantities though, just a wee little taste, and if grandpa drank it…well then.  So, I followed the directions I read about, steeped the bark in some hot water and was excited for the aroma……but……I was not to keen on the aroma.  I think it kinda smelled like a dog flea bath.  Surely, it will taste better, right?  I mean grandpa introduced me to Limberger cheese, it smells like stinky feet but I like the taste.  So, I tried my spot of tea.  Hmmmm.  much as I would like to tout the wonderful cup as being nostalgic and delicious….I cannot.  The bark is pretty though.  And, grandma and mom told me that if you don’t have anything nice to say…

(I don’t think I will care to have another cup of tea).
